We almost didn’t buy our new house because of the popcorn ceilings. We were dreading the mess and labor and expense of scraping the popcorn off the ceilings.

As I was searching the internet for an alternative I came across this website and was intrigued by the concept of gluing these tiles right on top of the popcorn. I ordered enough tiles to do my kitchen and it was about 1/3 of the price that it would have been to put up an actual tin ceiling. I was very happy about that.

You can install metal ceiling tiles either by using a grid system or by nailing them into your ceiling; in this article we discuss the “nail up” option.

When you buy our “nail up” metal ceiling tiles you will get full installation instructions but you will also find the following article helpful.

In our range of metal ceiling tiles the most popular choice is Aluminum, although we also offer Tin and Solid Copper. One of the great advantages of Aluminum is its resistance to corrosion and its durability so unlike steel it doesn’t rust. However, Aluminum does oxidise so the surface must be painted.

So you have bought your tiles and are ready to install them so let’s go straight to step one.

Find the center lines of the room

The main problem we almost all encounter is that rooms are rarely, if ever, square and it is important to make sure your ceiling tiles are installed square. So the first task is to find the center of the ceiling which you do by drawing visible grid lines that first divide the ceiling into equal halves and then quarters.

Preview by laying the tiles on the floor

Once you have begun installing the tiles it can be difficult to change the layout so for an overview of the final result lay out the tiles on the floor and adjust the pattern until you are satisfied. Remember to lap the panels away from the door into the room so that your joining lines will be less visible.

Attaching panels to the ceiling

These instructions are based on the assumption that you have a ceiling that is suitable to take the weight of the Aluminum tiles that will be nailed in place. The preferred surface is plywood as the tiles can be simply and securely nailed to the plywood.

Using the gridlines start by laying your tiles from the center of the ceiling and working slowly toward the edges.
Do not “final fix” but lightly tack the tiles until you are fully satisfied with your positioning. Lightly tacking means that the pins can be easily removed if you need to adjust the layout of the tiles.

Once you are satisfied fix the ceiling tiles in their final position using nails which you may have to “touch over” with paint so they cannot be seen.

A final word

Our Aluminum ceiling tiles are supplied ready painted and you can choose from our most expensive “Artisan” finishes that are hand painted, however, should you choose plain tiles to paint yourself make sure they are painted before installation, it is much, much easier.

Faux Tin, (Fake Tin)

Faux Tin Ceiling Tiles, sometimes called Fake Tin, are available in “glue up” and “drop in” options. The deep, 3-d designs, give an expensive look but at an affordable cost. The PVC from which the tiles are made have been Class “A” fire rated and they are recyclable.
